All three of these photos represent book design because they are book covers people have designed to fit the needs of the client. This mainly shows book covers but a book design will also design all aspects of the outward appearance such as the cover, back, bind, and inside flaps. The first and last photos show designs for books and the last one are considered some of the best of 2007. The center photo shows an alternative take on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.

  1. Explain the career or careers you are considering for this project. What does a person do for this job?
    1. I am interested in book design and as mentioned above Book Designer's spend a majority of their time designing the cover, back, bind, and flaps of books. Designers may also spend time creating layouts and selecting typography for the book. Simplified, an author writes the book, the designer creates it.
  2. What kind of skills or talents are required for this career?
    1. By going to a book design school students would eventually learn about adhesives, inks and papers, bookbinding, printing and publishing, papermaking, typography, calligraphy, history and sculptural work.
  3. What schooling is required? Where do they have this sort of program? 2 year, 4 year, tech school, liberal arts college, specialized art school?
    1. Upon looking at schools online, Book Design seems to be a specialized program offered at most Art Institutes, such as MIAD. I believe it is part of a Design's BA although I am unclear of which one, although my best guess is the Graphics Art BA.
  4. What kind of salary can you expect in this field? Starting? Mid-Career?
    1. From what I found searching the web is a salary on average of about 36k.
  5. How do you get started? Do you have to have a portfolio or internship or both or???
    1. I would assume you can apply for a job in a book publishing firm, it also mentioned that this can be a freelance type job. I wasn't able to find anything concrete.
  6. What will a typical day be like in this field?
    1. I couldn't locate specifics, but things like designing for a client and achieving a deadline seem to be the most prevalent day to day things.
  7. What do you plan to do for your self-promotional piece?
    1. I figure I'd create a book cover but instead of it being a cover for an actual book, fill it with information about myself and cool design like things that represent who I am.
  8. Explain how your idea illustrates this career
    1. By making a book cover it directly relates to a book designing career.
  9. List resources you used for research during this part of the project. Make sure they are active links. Google and other search engines are not resources.
